Hard work and sacrifice comprised Deremy Tijerina’s college career. Often commuting the roughly 50 miles every day from his hometown in Raymondville to South Texas College’s Pecan Campus, Deremy said he quickly learned the value of a college degree. Inspired by his family and their own sacrifice, now Deremy is a South Texas College graduate.

Despite the difficulties, Deremy immersed himself in his studies right away. In return, professors at STC did whatever it took to ensure he understood the material and help him graduate.

“I think prioritizing and time management was difficult during school. During the program, students don’t really have a life. Our life was about reading, studying and preparing for the next exam. Plus, we also had clinicals at the hospital and paperwork to get done, so we were constantly busy throughout the week. There have been times where I missed several family get togethers due to studying, but it was all worth it in the end.”

“To students who are following in the same field, you have to stay focused. Don’t be discouraged,” Deremy said. “There will be times when you feel overwhelmed with stress and want to give up, but you just have to tough it out and work hard. Always remember why you chose that career and your passion for it. God has a plan for everybody. He will get you through it. Just stay focused. Never give up. You can make it.”
