Dr. Jayson T. Valerio is the Interim Dean of Nursing and Allied Health for South Texas College and has over 20 years of experience in the field of healthcare. He provides leadership and academic guidance to faculty, staff, and students, as well as continuing to encourage men to join the field.

The Allied Health Schools (2017) indicate that women considerably outnumber men in healthcare fields:

  • Health and Medical Administrative Services
  • Medical/Clinical Assistant
  • Occupational Therapist Assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician/Assistant
  • Physical Therapist Technician/Assistant
  • Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research
  • Practical Nursing, Vocational Nursing and Nursing Assistants

Woman dominate the healthcare workforce by 78.4%, and that is primarily due to the stereotyping. However, institutions of higher education and organizations in the healthcare industry want men as much as women, if not more to fill vacancies.

South Texas College wants you to know the following:

  • Diversity is in the healthcare system.
  • Zero tolerance policy is enforced for gender discrimination.
  • Caring and empathy can be demonstrated by men as much as through women.
  • Technology and informatics play a large role in the healthcare.
  • Male preceptors are available to mentor during capstone courses.

The South Texas College Nursing & Allied Health Division has made tremendous progress toward gender equality. Dr. Valerio states, “With more continued efforts and robust awareness, I firmly believe that we will accomplish gender equality and heavily reduce gender-related biases in healthcare in the coming years by continuing to work alongside with other colleges, advisory committee groups and hospitals”.
